Dreamhost or Amazon?
In my ongoing source for a cheap, effective backup/archival solution, I am now drawn to two services: Dreamhost’s Files Forever service and Amazon Web Services’ Simple Storage Solution.
I have already come to the conclusion that if I want a robust, secure, disaster-agnostic backup/archival solution, I have to turn to “cloud computing.”
Here’s the thing. I really don’t mind losing a number of files. If my hard disk crashes, it wouldn’t be the end of the world if I lose my MP3s, my ripped DVDs, my applications, my downloaded installer files. All of these are, in some ways, recoverable. But pictures are a different matter. There is a lot of history and memories in those pictures. If I lose it, then it is impossible to recreate.
